Now that my GoFundMe campaign has surpassed 50% of its goal, I’ve been hard at work putting that money to work! I’ve composed contracts with an artist, purchased a domain and web hosting, and got this website made!!
I *was* going to make the website myself, but the only ones I know how to make just show pretty pictures, contact forms, and social media links. Simple stuff. But integrating a blog feed within the page… that’s up to date with SEO standards… is something I just don’t know how to do.
So I was hoping to outsource the job to someone else. I quickly mocked up the design above as a general idea, thinking that $125 bucks would yield me an impressive webpage which was responsive, user friendly, optimized for SEO, and captured the fun factor that my stories shall bring!
BUT this is what I got for $125. I actually cut out quite a bit of placeholder blogs/content from the photo above… but in all actuality, the backend of this webpage looks like this:
OMG right? I am somewhat seasoned when it comes to websites and WordPress, but jumping face-first into all THAT is totally intimidating, and was nothing like I had expected.
A wise man once told me:
Expectations ruin experiences. I was expecting an AMAZING website like the one I mocked up in Photoshop, but, in reality, I received something that didn’t look like the vision I had in mind.
That same wise man also told me:
You get what you pay for. Cutting corners to cut costs may seem financially wise, but, I will have to spend more time cleaning up the webpage (and hoping I don’t break anything on WordPress!) and even more time finding another web developer to bring beauty to my website.
But am I mad? No—not at all! This is all a learning experience for me, and I am happy I get to share it with you, too! You get to be with me every step of the way as I turn this fantasy of mine into an actual THING!
And hey, maybe this will inspire you to follow whatever dream you have. But you’ll get to learn from all my mistakes and know all the right steps to take on your journey 🙂
Check out my GoFundMe campaign here, share it with a friend, and contribute if you can!
